I strode down the long driveway of Xavier’s property. I’d always thought he had the most beautiful house, with trees overhanging the driveway. The sun was shining through the leaves, a mesmerizing effect. I would imagine living here and dreaming about walking this very same walk. But I couldn’t even focus on the beauty around me.

Tears stained my cheeks. In fact, I almost ran into someone else walking the opposite direction down the same path.

“Well hello there, beautiful.”

The male voice took me by surprise. He seemed to just appear in front of me, and all at once I knew what he was.

When he smiled, he showed off his fangs. I stared at him, a mixture of fear and curiosity filling my head.

He reached out a long, slender hand and I took it. We shook hands. “I’m Enzo,” he purred. “And you are?”

“Kara.”

“I see, and you’re a friend of Xavier’s, I take it?”

“Not really,” I said, shrugging my shoulders. “I work for him.”

“I see, I see,” he said, giving me a once over like I was a piece of meat. “Well, I can see why he’d take a liking to you. You look so familiar.”

“I get that a lot,” I grumbled, rolling my eyes. “If you’ll excuse me, I really need to get going.”

He put out his arm, stopping me. He sniffed the air, then leaned closer to me and smelled my face. I jerked away, glaring at him. “What are you doing?”

“Trying to get to know more about you, dear. Yes, there’s something very familiar about you, and I don’t just mean that you look similar to Xavier’s lost love.” He sniffed again, a slow smile appearing on his face. “I’m very interested in getting to know more about you, but sadly, I don’t have the time presently.”

“I really need to go.”

I pushed past his arm. Had Enzo wanted to, he could have forced me stay. Xavier had made it very clear to me that his type could kill me within a matter of seconds. But Enzo let me pass. I hurried away, knowing that no matter how fast I walked, he could catch up to me if he really wanted to.

At the end of the driveway, I glanced over my shoulder and he was gone. I breathed a sigh of relief. One vampire in my life was bad enough. I didn’t need a second.

I turned for home, pulling out my phone to check it and saw ten missed calls from Julia along with a string of text messages. The general gist of the messages was, Where are you? Are you okay? Why aren’t you responding?

I dialed her number, knowing she’d never forgive me if I didn’t reach out soon. I was tired, but never too tired for my best friend. In fact, I needed her more than I probably ever had before.

Julia answered, her voice screechy. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been worried sick!”

“Sorry, I passed out at work and Xavier brought me back to his place to recover,” I said.
